I walk into Middlefork School on my first day of second grade. My classmates and I are all in a circle playing the name game. I stand up and introduce myself “Hi, everyone my name is Sheff Dynek.” Everyone stars mumbling in confusion, so I stand up again and say “ugh... Sorry my name is Sheffield Dynek,” as if that would make things better. My teacher asks me, “Sheffield maybe you would like to tell the class your story.” So I stand up and tell everyone the origins of my name, and when I finish everyone is amazed. I’m the coolest kid in class, until the end of their season when the cubs only end up winning 35 of their games.
It was 2003 and the cubs had miraculously made it all the way to the semifinals. My mother gets call from a representative a fox news station asking if my family would like to come in for an interview. The following Sunday all seven of us; Julie, Ralph, Addison, Clark, Grace, Ivy, and I trudge in for a live interview. Everything goes great and we’re out of there just in time for a nice lunch. The following Monday I go to school. Right when I walk in the doors I’m stampeded by giddy little seventh graders begging for my autograph. They had all seen the interview and thought that I was some sort of a star. The cubs would later go on to loosing that series and continuing the infamous cubby curse.
Walking down the street wearing my favorite cubs shirt from the 1970’s some kid yells out the window of his jeep 4x4 with a cardinals sticker on the back “the cubs #@% suck!!” me being the cubs fan that I am yell back some profanity. I see the car brake then comes to an abrupt stop. Two kids jump out of the car and start walking towards me, we start pushing each other and yelling then one of them swings at me; I duck and hit him with a right hook, the second kid swings and makes contact with my face, I fall over and one of them jumps on top of me, I push him off kick him, then the other kid tackles me hits me again but this time in the ribs, somehow I manage to squeak my way out and run as fast as I can out of there. Walking away I ponder, well maybe I should pick another team… nah I’m a cubs fan for life.
